Introduction

Rotary Kiln, also known as rotary calciner, is a type of building material equipment. Its biggest advantages are large output, uniform calcination, and stable quality. Rotary Kiln can be classified into cement kiln, metallurgical and chemical kiln, and lime kiln, according to the different materials being processed. It can be divided into variable-diameter rotary kiln and through-diameter rotary kiln according to the appearance, and can be further classified into cement rotary kiln, ceramsite sand rotary kiln, kaolin rotary kiln, lime rotary kiln, etc., according to the purpose.

 

Working Principle and Application

Rotary kiln Working Principle

Raw materials enter the high-end of the rotary kiln cylinder from the tail of the rotary kiln for calcination. Due to the inclination and slow rotation of the rotary kiln cylinder, the materials have a composite movement, rolling along the circumferential direction and moving from the high-end to the low-end along the axial direction. The raw materials go through the processes of decomposition, calcination, and cooling inside the rotary kiln, and are discharged from the low-end of the kiln cylinder as cement clinker, then enter the cooling machine.

Fuel is injected into the rotary kiln from the head and burned inside, heating the raw materials and causing them to calcine into clinker. The hot air formed during the heat exchange with the materials enters the tail-end system of the rotary kiln and is discharged into the atmosphere through the chimney.

Cement kiln is mainly used for calcining cement clinker, which can be divided into dry process cement kiln and wet process cement kiln. Metallurgical and chemical kilns are mainly used for the roasting of poor iron ore in steel mills, the oxidation roasting of chromium and nickel iron ore, the roasting of high-alumina vanadium soil in refractory plants, the roasting of clinker and alumina hydroxide in aluminum plants, the roasting of chromite sand and chromite powder in chemical plants, etc. Lime kiln (i.e., active lime kiln) is used for the calcination of active lime and light-burned dolomite used in steel mills and ferroalloy plants.

Applications:

Treatment of hazardous waste

The rotary kiln operates under negative pressure and has a high and stable incineration temperature, which enables full combustion of waste. Due to its excellent sealing performance, the rotary kiln does not cause dust pollution. In addition, when incinerating waste, it generates a certain amount of heat, which reduces energy consumption and lowers costs for customers

 

Smelting

The cement rotary kiln can not only calcine cement, but also be used to calcine clay, limestone, and dry slag. In addition, the rotary kiln can be used as a smelting equipment for metals, sintering and roasting ores, concentrates, and intermediates. In the metallurgical industry, it is used for the magnetization roasting of iron ore in steel plants, the silicon-thermic reduction of magnesium, the oxidation roasting of chromium and nickel iron ores, and the calcination of steel plant and ferroalloy plant lime and dolomite in refractory material plants (i.e., active lime kilns).
